48 Hours And Unlimited Money…. what would you do?

This week’s Listicle topic was selected by the lovely Mommy Padawan. She what I would do and where I would go if I had 48 hours free of all responsibilities and unlimited cash. First, I decided that I have to take a boat, plan, limo, and train during my 48 hours!!

1. Where to go? This one is hard, I mean I only have 48 hours. Can’t go too far. But if it’s a dream, I’m going to the Wine Train in Napa Valley.

2. How to get there? I’d fly their on the fastest flight, with the best seats in the house for my hubby and I. We’d leave early and get early. First class baby! Private jet, first class, just me and my hubby.

3. Flying in the family. I would fly in all of my hubby and I’s closest family and friends. They are all flying first class too.

4. We’d have a gourmet chief on the plan making us and amazing breakfast in the sky.

5. Where are staying? I’m rent out an entire beautiful location just for out guest.

6. We’d spend the rest of the day enjoying the environment in the area. Eating gourmet meals and enjoying the Napa Valley.

7. Food/Wine train for dinner. Yeah!

8. The next morning we’d have breakfast on yacht, just me an my hubby…. a romantic!

9. Shopping…. why not with unlimited cash? And I’m buying houses for everyone in my family and rental property. Too deep for this fun assignment? I know. lol

10. The whole family would slip back into the family plan and head either to a great city that has a team we like that’s playing that night :-)   court-side NBA seat in a great city. After the game we’d ride in limos all round town—the best restaurant, a few clubs, and ending next to the pool. Before my magic runs out everyone would get first class flights back home….

What would you do if you had 48 hours,

no responsibilities, and unlimited cash?

Abraham Lincoln…. Vampire Hunter?

Movie Poster for Lincoln Vampire Slayer

Movie poster for Lincoln Vampire Slayer

Yesterday I discovered possibly the worse book/movie plot ever; it irritated and offended me on so many levels I’m having a hard time writing this because I’m so annoyed. If you plan on seeing or reading Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter, please skip this post. If just the title made you suck you teeth, read on.

The plot, in short: As a child Abraham Lincoln finds out that not only are vampires real, but that his grandfather and mother were killed by them. He vows to wipe out vampires, and forms an alliance with a good vampire that teaches him how to kill bad ones. For years Lincoln goes around killing vampires one-by-one. Then one day while in the South he sees a slave auction and follows the slave master home. GASP! The master is a vampire and the slaves were bought as food! The only logical next step? Lincoln becomes an abolitionist in hopes of cutting off the food supply of the vampires. He begins a political career by day, and kills vampires at night. A conspiracy ensues where Lincoln uses his powers to end the vampire population’s growth and power by ending slavery–and starting a Civil War….

Yes, that is just about the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. This movie opens in theaters this summer.

My issues with this “story”: Do you realize most kids don’t know much about actual real, important historical facts? This week, I promise you a kid argued with me (a history teacher) that there is a woman depicted on Mount Rushmore. He was dead-serious about it too.

Many children confuse things they see in movies and on TV with reality. If you think I’m playing, ask some random kid elementary you know some a basic American History question that they should be able to answer. Ask a high school kid who is running for President. You’d be shocked at some of the answers. No wonder I have kids still arguing with me that Obama wasn’t born in America. There is a whole generation that accepts just about anything as fact without question. I promise you one kid is going to walk out of that theater after seeing this film with all kind of weird ideas.

In line with that, my second issue: I don’t appreciate, as an woman of African descent, having the plight of my ancestors boiled down to being a food source for fantasy creatures. This story explains the reason cultures, families, a continent, and parts of history were raped and destroyed was because vampires like dark meat. Seriously, seriously, seriously offensive.

I teach World History and there is literally one page, ONE PAGE, in the textbook about the transatlantic slave trade. When I taught US History, I think it was like 4 pages. Really? Hundreds of years of history that affected the history, culture, and society of the human race and it’s only important enough for 4 pages?

I already have a horrendous time teaching this precious section of history. Kids come to me with so many misconceptions and lack of knowledge on the subject already. Making slavery the twist in this stupid story will only belittle it’s significance even more.

I have no idea who this author is, but how dare he warp history in this way to make a few bucks.

The only thing the story did get right is that Abraham’s abolish tendency had more to do with his personal agenda than a moral code. Thank goodness that got one thing right.

Tried It: Seafood Gumbo Recipe

Source: Yolanda on Pinterest

So I finally tried it–I made seafood gumbo! This is something I’ve been dying to eat for a long time. Since I don’t live near New Orleans, and don’t know anyone who knows how to make this dish, you can see my challenge.

I found this awesome recipe from Cooking with Carolyn (embedded below). I won’t post the recipe, because you can find it on Grand Diamond Seasoning’s site. Gumbo can be expensive and complicated, so I was a bit apprehensive. Also, when I think of someone making gumbo, I think that it’s a process that will take hours, but Carolyn’s recipe cut the time down dramatically! I wondered if it could be good. But, like I say, part of living is trying new thing–so I bought the ingredients and gave it a try.

The result? GREAT! I was licking my fingers, and my husband, who can be a picky eater, loved it! We had some surprise dinner guests, and my husband put his chest out and said “Let’s have some gumbo!” I was nervous. There are certain dishes you better perfect before serving to other people–collard greens, fried chicken, gumbo. To make it worse, these guests had actually lived in the New Orleans area for a bit. I asked for an excuse as it was my first time, but it seemed it wasn’t needed. There were no left overs!

I also gave some gumbo to friends, who text me later with their “undying loyalty”. Do I suggest you try this recipe? Yum, YES!!!

So here are my “heads up” to learn from me: This is a large portion recipe. It filled up my largest pot. It served 10 people multiple servings each. I did not freeze or store any it, because I don’t think it would do well. I suppose you could cut it in half, but gumbo is kind of a “large pot” recipe by nature. I therefore suggest that you prepare to serve lots of family and friends. Also, be extra cool and take a serving to an elderly person you know for a treat. Trust me, you’ll have enough!

This dish should be scooped over white rice for the best culinary effect!

Yoli Dreams Gets An Upgrade!

Yoli Dreams has been upgraded in a major way! After lots of research I decided to give up my home at Blogger and move into the world of WordPress! It was not an easy decision, and I toggled back and forth a bit. Don’t get me wrong, blogger was good to me, but I thought it was time to spread my wings a bit.

Yoli Dreams
And speaking of wings, doesn’t the blog look fabulous! I want to thank April over at A Mommy’s Blog Design Studio! I thinks she did a fabulous job! The blog looks better than could have ever done on my own! Also, April brings the whole team to help, and I  followed her referrals much to my delight! Miss Pickle created my  new cartoon icon/logo, and RFE Hosting transferred Yoli Dreams to its new home and installed the new design.

I did lots of shopping around before deciding who to work with, and I know I picked the right folks! I couldn’t be any happier with the professionalism, service, and results! They are my new blog design team!

10 Ways To Make It Earth Day Everyday

Normally I stick to the Listicles theme, but today I decided to stray a bit. Yesterday was Earth Day, and I took sometime to reflect on the planet. I’m gonna be honest, while I am environmental conscious I’m not a “green head”. Everything in my house is not recycled, I don’t own a compositor, and I don’t buy organic veggies (can’t afford ‘em). That doesn’t mean that all my efforts on helping the earth are for naught. There are a few things that I plan to do to help Earth Day be everyday in my home. It’s the little things on a consistent bases that will make this Earth a better place for all.

  1. Contact my local municipality about recycling. You would think that in 2012 every community would be earth-conscious enough to recycle, right? Not where I live. There are no green bins, or blue trash cans given out by the city to recycle. I take time to enter contests and contact corporations when I’ve had a horrid time at one of their establishments. Taking 5 minutes to shoot the county commissioners requesting a local recycling program should be no problem!
  2. No CDs please! I don’t buy CDs often, however being married to a DJ there always seems to be someone at a party handing out their “latest track”. Rarely do they get listened to (being honest). So for this year it doesn’t matter if it’s an album I want or a promotional freebie, I’m saying “No Thank You” to new music unless it is electronic.
  3. Cloth bags. I’m not going to pretend that I will remember to take a cloth bag in every time I go to the grocery store. However I will place a cloth bag in my car. If I can remember it a few times, that is a few less plastic bags, right?
  4. Invest in a water filter system. I don’t know if I want a tap or a jug system, but I know I need one. I go through a lot of filtered water. How many plastic bottles could I get rid of from the local landfill? Probably a lot!
  5. Electronic Bill Pay. I’m going to have to work on this. I am kinda old school–I like holding the bill in my hand. However I can think of a bill or two that I could have electronically delivered to save some paper.
  6. “Green Lightbulbs”. This just makes sense from so many standpoints. They last longer and draw less energy. Lower electric bill? Yes please!
  7. Weather-proof the doors. I know there is a large crack underneath my screen door. I wonder how much AC and heat have escaped through the cracks around the door seals?
  8. Cleaning like my gradma used to do. I really don’t like using chemicals to clean anyway. I have no problem trying to look up some cleaning techniques that would help me stop using so much synthetic cleaners.
  9. Turn off the light! You can hear us yelling that normally in the house. It shall continue. If you’re not in the room shut of the “not free” (as my momma would say) lights.
  10. Changing the shower sprayer. I love taking showers! That’s not going ti change. However I could change the shower sprayer to a more water efficient one.
So those are my “Earth Friendly” achievable vows for this year. What are yours?

The Never-To-Be Mother?

“I don’t think you’re ready to have a kid.” Those are the words that are echoing through my soul right now.

Recently it was my three year anniversary and also my birthday (one day apart). It’s a time to reflect. Where is my life? Where is it going? I’m just starting to acknowledge how much my OCD, solely acceptable unquestioned beliefs, and scariness of what I could have been, has crippled me.
If things aren’t just so, the way I feel that they must be, I won’t accept it. My desk at work most be clear and orderly for me to think. If I haven’t prepared my outfits for the work week by Sunday I’m just a bit off.
Link that to my views of motherhood:  I’ve always thought that if I couldn’t be a stay at home mom, then I just wouldn’t be a mom. I told myself I’d be OK with that; things are my way or the highway, right?
I’m 31 and I find myself standing in the road to life watching everyone zoom by me: sisters, nieces, students, members of where I worship, mommy bloggers. It hurts and I’m not going a damn place.
So I bend, I flex. Even simply telling my husband that what I wanted was a child was huge. Heck, posting it here on my blog is huge. This is part of my therapy. It’s tough to trust people to understand me, get me, and not judge me.
So I told my husband. His reaction? “I don’t think you’re ready to have a kid.” He says I need to learn to rely on God when things aren’t ‘just so’. Even if I could afford to stay at  home he asked me “What if the kid has a serious birth defect–are you going to fall apart on me?”
What a jealous, loaded question.
I feel as if I will never be ready. Is anyone really? Is it a lack of faith he is pointing out, or that need in my DNA to have things the way I think they should be? Can either be fixed? I believe all is possible. But without support, I feel as if I’ll never be a good mother…. Maybe never a mother at all…
