Even Superman has to take his cape to the cleaners

Adventures in Awesome Living

by Sunil Bali, Chief Energy Officer, 17-07-11

I was at a dinner party with some medics yesterday, when the conversation turned to stress in the work place.

It transpires that the waiting rooms of doctor’s surgeries are overflowing with stressed out managers and executives who complain of too much work and too little time.

Whether you’re Superman or Wonder Woman, there comes a time when you have to take your cape to the cleaners and slow down before putting it back on.

Quotes

I do nothing and then I do something. But it’s taken years of investigating idleness in all its forms to be able to achieve this. My discipline is borne out of concerted study of idleness - Will Self

You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet, still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice; it will roll in ecstasy at your feet - Franz Kafka

To do nothing at all is the most difficult thing in the world - Oscar Wilde

An idle mind is a questioning, skeptical mind. Hence it is a mind not too bound up with ephemeral things, as the minds of workers are. The idler, then, is somebody who separates himself from his occupation: there are many people scarcely conscious of living except in the exercise of some conventional occupation - Robert Louis Stevenson

If Only I Could Erase….

This week’s Monday Listicles assignment was 10 things I’d like to delete. *evil laughter* Just my kind of list! I’ve immediate started imagining that I had one of those circles you use on art computer programs to erase things like…

  1. The day I started picking hair (OCD reference). Yeah, that would probably be number one.
  2. The time I took to watch Australia. I will never get that time back…
  3. My Mother-In-Law… wait that’s mean. I take that back.
  4. The day my Grandpa died…. I miss him…
  5. About 8 annoying pound off my mid section and thighs…
  6. About 15 pounds that covering that 6-pack my husband used to have
  7. Albert Einstein’s decision to help with the development of Nuclear Weapons.
  8. The moment my mama got ovarian cancer
  9. The moment my mama got breast cancer
  10. The 8-years George Bush was President… come on, even people who voted for him look back on that and want a re-do….

BONUS: I want that two and a half days I wait in lines every year back! I hate waiting in line!

If you could erase anything, what would you erase?

“Griffin Face”

A funny post to start your weekend…. (you’ll get it if you know who Blake Griffin and Chris Paul are)

5 Tips To Have A Healthy Dog Diet on a Budget

I really don’t understand why people pay so much for dog food! My parents just adopted a puppy German Shepard and they asked me how much money I pay to feel my Mini Pin, Mari. Well, though it is going to be no comparison (that puppy probably eats more than my doggie right now), I told them there is absolutely no reason they should blow their budget on dog food.

First and foremost I think it is extremely important to feed your dog good, wholesome food. I am a Blue Buffalo Dog Food pet parent myself. (I’m not on the Blue Buffalo payroll by the way–I just really like the product). If you think you can feed your dog any old thing, or because it says “healthy” in he title, they’ll be in good shape, you’re kidding yourself. The quality of most dog food would astonish you. You have to remember dogs are domesticated animals with a wild background. These hunting breeds need to have proper diet to look and feel their best for years to come.

There are some simple things you can do to help your dog eat nutritiously, and stay within your budget. Here are 5 tips I gave to my parents…

  • There is nothing wrong with dry food! Ask most vets and they will tell you that dry food is much better for your dog to eat on a regular bases than can food. While Mari sometimes gets treats mixed into her food, sometimes she doesn’t. Her main source of nutrition is Blue Dog Food. I don’t mind paying a few extra bucks because it’s her primary source of food, and it’s well balanced.

  • Can food is occasional. I mix a few scoops in with her dry food, and she loves it. Again, I opt for Blue only. She enjoys the canned food, and because it’s just mixed in it lasts (remember, she is small). We only go through two cans a month.

  • Chicken Breast! Ever been to the meat department and saw “manger special” on meat they have to get rid of quick? Well snag that chicken up, boil with no seasoning, and chop it up. Place it in a plastic baggie and mix a small handful in with the dog’s food, and they’ll love you! Plus you’ll know exactly what your pooch is eating!

  • Boiled eggs and sardines! My dog loves boiled eggs! Not only are they full of nutrition, they are cheaper than canned food! Think about it… you can grab a dozen eggs on sale from Walgreens for a buck. You can feed you large dog 12 servings (mixed in with dry food) or 24 servings for a smaller dog. Seriously, how could it be any cheaper? As for the sardines: because they are so potent I can feed my dog 3-4 times from one can. Sardines are great to help you dog have a shiny coat. People think cats are the only ones that like fish…. not true!

Following these tips I have a happy, healthy, lean-mean Mini-Pin machine! And I honestly spend no more than $15 on her food per month (with treats, but that’s a whole other article)!

Remember these suggestions are based on personal opinion and experiences.

I Am OCD

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder isn’t about being neurotic, crazy, or overly concerned with color coordination. For someone with OCD is about living in a whole other head-space than others.

My OCD is with me when no one else is. It has a hand in almost every decision I make, if I realize it or not. It is in almost all of my childhood memories, both good and bad.  It went on my senior trip with me. It is in every picture I took on my wedding day. My OCD scared me the first day I step in a classroom, and bolstered me when I needed to know I could accomplish what seemed insurmountable.

It has been an enemy, the boogie man under the bed, the cave I know is always there to shelter me. I go to sleep with it. I wake up with it. I acknowledge it in my life. I manage it, work with it and try to heal it.

OCD is a big part of my personality. I wouldn’t be “Yoli” without it. And since I love myself, I must accept the role it plays in who I am. It’s made me better, stronger, and more empathetic. It’s a factor that makes me unique. I couldn’t be who I am without experiencing it.

Wordless Wednesday: 5/9/12

Here are a few shots I captured during last week’s excitement! Outside waiting to get into the play off game…

The is the crowd as they were coming into the game...

Here is a funny picture I snapped of my husband and my doggie in a face-off. My hubby is eating chicken, and my doggie is about to help herself to some!

Chicken Eating Hubby vs. Mari. Who will win?

Lastly, in order to stay true to May’s National Pet Month celebration, I wanted to first pass on a pet photo competition being held this month by Purina Pet Food.

I end with updated pictures of new dogs at my local kill-shelter. If you can, rescues a pet and save a life! You can get the best dog in the world at the pound–we did!

Remember, if you leave your Wordless Wednesday post in the link below, I will try to visit your post by the weekend. Also if you follow my blog and leave a comment I’ll follow you back :-)

Review: Dinner Impossible Live

Chef Irvine, my hubby, and me!

A few weeks ago my husband took me to see Chef Robert Irvine’s show, Dinner Impossible Live. You know who Chef Robert is–he has two shows on Food Network: Restaurant Impossible and Dinner Impossible. He has also been a celebrity chef on some other Food Network shows. My hubby snagged a sweet deal from Group On because he knew his foodie wife would love him forever for it (and Ido!)

I’ll be honest, while I was excited to go see Chef Irvine, I was seriously wondering if watching him cook from a distance for 2 hours would be entertaining. I mean I love to watch chefs at work close up and personal–especially if I can taste the product. However, this wasn’t going to be the case at this event. There were a few hundred people there and I held little hope of getting up close and personal.

The minute Chef Irvine stepped on the stage, he owned the crowd. He is an amazing personality, and I was throughly entertained the entire way through. He is witty, commanding, resourceful, knowledgeable, athletic, and funny. Now I can tell you from experience he is the same in person as he is on TV. I don’t want to give away too much about the contents, but I can tell you that the show was creative, funny, entertaining, and foodie-educational.

I took away some recipes that I started to plan for in the month of May, great tips (like did you know that Grape Seed Oil is better to cook delicate meats instead of the often chosen Olive Oil?) and a big smile.

If you have an opportunity to go to this show, go! You won’t be disappointed! Stay tuned for a review of Chef Irvine’s cookbook “Impossible to Easy” which I was able to pick up cheaper at the show, along with an autograph and a picture with Chef!

Side note: Chef Robert Irvine is a serious hottie! The TV does no justice! Cute smile, nice body! Just saying… *innocent*
